TFT-LCD Module vs. TFT-LCD Panel: An Explanation

As a person who sells TFT LCD products on a daily basis, I spend a good portion of my day looking through LCD data sheets, recommending solutions, talking to our value-add suppliers and trying to sus out the best opportunities for business.

Part of the difficulty of selling TFT LCD products is the convoluted language and slight differences between displays that can cause confusion to a "layperson" i.e. someone who isn't a display engineer. Fortunately, we have some great resources for information and, because Display Alliance is a "marketing cooperative," and we happen to stock and distribute LCD's, I thought I would share some important information that I just happened to learn today.

LCD News 5.6.2011-NCR's LEED Cert., Tipping Point for US Manufacturers, Chimei IPS, Planar's LCD Videowall, Tablet PC Oversupply, LG OLED Production and MIT's New 3D Technology

NCR Columbus GAWage rates rise in China causing US manufacturers to rethink and establish their production facilities and supply chains in the US. For many, the economics have already reached a tipping point.

Chimei steps in to aid in production of IPS LCD panels for the iPad 2, as LG deals with "light leekage" screen issues from their 6th generation LCD plant. Sources site the primary cause of iPad 2 shortages due to the flawed displays at the LG plant.

Planar Systems, a worldwide leader in digital display solutions, report 21% year over year revenue growth from Q2 2010.  Gerry Perkel, (Planar CEO,) cited strong sales of digital signage products, particularly LCD video walls, as the driving factors in Planar's Growth.

Rugged Tablet PCs aim to improve automation, performance and profitability in the field service industry.

LG confirms 4.5G OLED production line of small sized panels for smartphone makers. The new line will allow LG to bump monthly production of substrates from 4k to 12k by mid 2011.

NCR gains LEED green building certification after renovation of a 25 year old battery plant in Columbus, GA now used for production of ATMs, retail self check-out machines and DVD rental kiosks for the North American market.

LCD News 5.2.2011-TFT LCD Panel Makers Profits and Shipments Down, Expected Growth In Tablet PC and CCFL Television Market

Samsung's net profit drops 30%, (US $2.6 billion,) sites difficult business environment Q1 2011 as cause, will focus on smartphones and tablets as well as premium LCD panels and TV's for growth in 2011.

2011 flatpanel growth half that of 2010, with LED backlights accounting for an expected 50% of total TVs shipped in 2011. TV brands may shift focus back to CCFL backlit TVs.

TV and tablet PCs expected to fuel TFT LCD panel shipments in Q2 2011, with an expected 10.2% growth. AUO & CMI both to see 200% growth in tablet PC segment.

LCD News 4.27.2011- AUO Panel Shipments Down, Toshibas Touch Panel Display, LED Drivers for Optrex and NEC and Clear iPhone4 Backplates

AUO Q1 2011 financial results, sees substantial loss. Large size panel shipments up 4.3% year-over year,  small and medium size panel shipments down 23.7% (YOY.)  Expects high end growth for smartphones, Tablet PCs, LED and 3D related products.

Toshiba now offering integrated LCD/capacitive touch sensor 7.0" panel. Sites vehicle-mounted and industrial as ideal use. The new technology reduces thickness by 57% and weight by 48%, as compared to traditional LCD's with external touch sensors.

Applied Concepts Inc (US based manufacturer of LCD and LED solutions) announced today an updated line to their high end LED drivers for Optrex and NEC Display (size 4.3" and up,) ideal for military, medical, and aerospace application. Offers "Cross Reference" and "Application Notes" tools for customers.  Displaying at SID 2011, booth #1331.

On a consumer note, California based iFixit now offering clear back plates for the iPhone 4 @ $29.99. If you havent perused iFixit's website yet, check it out. They offer the most comprehensive troubleshooting guides and repair manuals for tech devices on the web.

LCD News 4.26.2011- Sharp and the iPhone, S-LCD, New Glass Substrate by Asahi and LG's Shiruken Display

Will Sharp supply Apple's next-generation iPhone with their p-Si LCD panels?

S-LCD (a joint venture between Sony Corp. and Samsung Electronics to manufacture LCD Televisions and memory cards) reduces capital by $555 million, notes faltering LCD TV demand as cause, aims to improve capital structure.
