LCD prices expected to rebound
taipeitimes.com- The price of LCD panels used in televisions is expected to rebound gradually next quarter from near-cost level for most manufacturers after a prolonged downward spiral, US market researcher DisplaySearch said yesterday. That would pave the way for solid recovery in the second quarter, when anticipated rising demand comes to support panel prices, David Hsieh, a vice president of DisplaySearch, told reporters on the sidelines of a TV supply chain forum held in Taipei. Unlike the downcycle that occurred two years ago, the correction this time stemmed from excessive inventories rather than frozen demand caused by a global economic slump, Hsieh said. Samsung, Sony In Talks To Make 11th-Generation LCD Panels
online.wsj.com- South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. and Japan's Sony Corp. are currently in talks to jointly produce next-generation liquid crystal displays, according to the Maeil Business Newspaper. "(Sony) is looking into plans to produce 11th-generation LCDs through S-LCD, but the details, including the investment size and the manufacturing date, haven't been fixed yet," the local newspaper quoted an unnamed official at the Japanese company as saying. S-LCD, which was formed in 2004, is an LCD panel-making joint venture by Samsung and Sony and is based in South Korea. If the two companies agree to strike the deal early next year, the production of such panels may begin in the second half of 2012, the paper added, citing another industry source. Beijing approves Samsung, LG to build LCD plants in China
english.yonhapnews.co.kr- The government of China has approved Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Display Co., the world's two largest makers of liquid-crystal displays (LCDs), to build plants in the country, sources in mainland China said Thursday. According to sources in Beijing, an executive meeting of the State Council, China's Cabinet, on Wednesday decided to grant approval to the South Korean manufacturers for construction of the new LCD plants. Corning Posts Higher 3Q Profit
