Touch Panels, Advanced Technologies Drive Smartphone Display Demand: NPD DisplaySearch "Active matrix OLED (AMOLED) displays are using on-cell touch, while thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) makers are focusing on in-cell touch technology for high-resolution low temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) TFT. Currently, the top two global smartphone brands—Apple and Samsung—are leading the adoption of these approaches. " via CENS

Cadillac XTS Configurable Instrument-Panel Display "But it’s safe to say that Cadillac sets a precedent with the LCD instrument panel that’s part of the Cue system on the 2013 XTS. Although it's not fully configurable, the driver gets a choice of four different screens, including Simple (for Caddy’s traditional country-club codger) and a video-gamelike Enhanced mode designed to appeal to the younger demographic that the brand is hoping to attract." via MSN

Next-gen iPhone with "Gorilla Glass inlay" to launch in Sept. despite reported component shortage "According to industry checks the two suppliers will be able to pump out a small number of panels and contribute to Japanese display maker JDI's already-growing stockpile, which will stand at over 10 million units before the end the third quarter. Overall, in-cell panel supply should reach between 14 to 18 million units in the third quarter, sufficient for the next-generation iPhone's rollout." via AppleInsider

Import tax increase to boost LCD panel sector "Under efforts to advance the local LCD panel industry, China has raised tariffs on imported units to 5 percent from 3 percent. The tax applies to 32in and larger variants without backlight. The measure is aimed at reducing dependence on foreign suppliers. " via Global Sources

Factbox: Japan's struggling TV maker Sharp "Its two most advanced plants are the Sakai and Kameyama liquid crystal display factories in western Japan. Sakai, which builds TV panels, is 46 percent owned by Taiwanese partner Hon Hai. Kameyama is the hub of Sharp's small LCD business, supplying panels to customers including Apple Inc for its iPad and iPhone." via Chicago Tribune
