TrustedReviews: Philips Cinema 21:9 58PFL9955H/12 Review
displayblog.com- Is 21:9 the next wide? Most if not all film are wider than 16:9 and if you enjoy watching movies more than TV the more theater-like experience from Philips’ 21:9 TV sets might serve you better. Although a 58-inch TV might be too big to use as a monitor, a monitor with a 21:9 aspect ratio would be terrific to put up two side-by-side webpages, documents, presentations, or really wide spreadsheets. Super AMOLED Surplus in 2011?
displayblog.com- DigiTimes → Phone Arena → Engadget: Samsung Mobile Display (SMD) makes the Super AMOLED displays that go into every Samsung branded smartphone. Currently SMD makes 3 million of these per month. Starting June 2011 that number will grow to 30 million per month. But these aren’t regular OLED displays: SMD’s Super AMOLEDs make use of a PenTile Matrix sub-pixel structure pioneered by Clairvoyante and now Nouvoyance after being purchased by Samsung. PenTile Matrix has a 2×2 sub-pixel structure that allows for a visual equivalent pixel format of 800xRGBx480. As far as I know there is no OLED volume production technology that can cram 800xRGBx480 pixels into a 3.5-inch panel. Click here to read more..

Toshiba: In Talks With El Araby To Build LCD TV Plant In Egypt
online.wsj.com- TOKYO (Dow Jones)--Toshiba Corp. (6502.TO) is in talks with home electronics maker El Araby to build a new LCD TV plant in Egypt, hoping to tap into potential future demand in the Middle East and Africa, a Toshiba spokesman said Monday. The Japanese national broadcaster NHK cited people familiar with the matter earlier Monday as saying Toshiba had reached an agreement to launch a joint venture with Egypt-based El Araby. Toshiba will invest about Y5 billion through the joint venture to build a new LCD TV-making facility at El Araby's existing plant in Egypt, NHK said. Click here to read more..

LCD Panel Prices Plunging
dealerscope.com- Prices of LCD TVs, either LED-based or traditionally CCFL LCDs, have dropped dramatically in the past year, with LED falling 44 percent and CCFL 24 percent from last October to this October. According to numbers released last week by DisplaySearch, the price drops are attributable to both falling prices of LCD chips and a shift towards oversupply in the supply chain. Best LCD TV deals to come after Black Friday
money.cnn.com- NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Ultra-low prices for flat screen LCD TVs are typical for Black Friday. But this year, the best deals are expected to come even later in the holiday season and into early 2011. The average price for a 42-inch LCD TV is forecast to be $626 this quarter, but the price is expected to fall below $600 in the beginning of next year before rising again, according to NPD Group. Prices for 52-inch LCD TVs are expected to drop by $120 on average during the same time period. Click here to read more..

AUO's AMOLED project is being subsidized by Taiwan's government
oled-info.com- Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) has approved subsidies totaling NT$600 million ($20 million) - which will go into two projects, one of them being AUO's AMOLED project. AUO 14-inch OLED prototype. AUO are gearing up towards AMOLED mass production in Q2 2011, and they plan to produce small- and medium-size displays using 3.5-Gen and 4.5-Gen lines. AUO are also working towards flexible AMOLED displays. We're not sure which project is being subsidized by this grant. Click here to read more..

Super LCD, Explained
displayblog.com- Everything is super these days. Super AMOLED. Super IPS. Super PVA. And now Super LCD. So is Super LCD really super? Super LCD is manufactured by Sony Mobile Display (SMD). SMD has focused on low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) TFT LCDs, but with the partial acquisition of Seiko Epson’s Epson Imaging Devices (EID), SMD has incorporated amorphous silicon (a-Si) TFT LCD technology, which is easier and cheaper to manufacture. Super LCD sports SMD’s VSPEC III wide-viewing angle technology (branded as Vistarich) combined with a new LCD driver that leads to a contrast ratio of 800:1 and 160/160 viewing angles (>100:1 CR). Color gamut is a claimed 100% sRGB. Sony reports that optical characteristics are equivalent to organic EL displays, or OLEDs. Super LCD also features lower power consumption, low EMI, and Windows-On technology. That last bit eliminates the air gap between the panel and the glass cover resulting in less surface reflectance. Lower power consumption is the result of a higher aperture ratio and better light transmittance. Click here to read more..
